Happy Blogiversary To Me!

That's right, my little ol' blog is one year old today! I can't believe I've been blogging for a whole year already. I guess this little experiment is working out.

The last year has really seen a lot of changes for us and a lot of fun experiences. I have really enjoyed recording all of them here. I love being able to look back through this blog and remember the things we've done and places we've been. It's nice to have a record of such a fun time in our lives.

Thanks to everyone who reads my ramblings. It's been a blast sharing the last year with you! Hopefully you'll stick with me as I continue to document my life as a lawyer's wife...

Reason #1190818 Why I Love My Husband

After you read my last post about our Easter celebration, you may have thought to yourself, "wow! What a fun Easter!" And that's true, it was. It was a wonderful holiday. But it was missing something. My Easter was not complete.

What was missing, you ask? I'll tell you.

REESE'S PEANUT BUTTER EGGS. Also known as the BEST CANDY EVER. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are my favorite candy on any given day. But the eggs...oh, the eggs. There's just something about them that makes them even better than the regular cups. I would say maybe it's because there's no "crust," just center peanut butter chocolate goodness. (I eat around the edges of peanut butter cups first, so I can enjoy the innards last.) But I'm not even sure that's it, because the other holiday cups don't thrill me like the eggs. The Christmas trees? Sure, they're fine. The Valentine's hearts and Halloween pumpkins are tasty too. But none can compare to the EGG.

But, this year, my life was without Reese's eggs. And it was sad. Our grocery and drug stores didn't seem to have them. As Easter approached I was lacking eggs and everyone seemed to be sold out. Easter came and went, and alas, I resigned myself to an Easter without a single Reese's egg to enjoy.

But then...enter my knight in shining armor! Last night Eric brought home the last Reese's egg he was able to find. It's an Easter miracle! And... IT'S A BIG ONE! I have never had a giant Reese's egg before but I am so looking forward to it. How do I even tackle it? Pick it up and take a bite? Knife and fork? I just don't know, but this is a wonderful problem to have.

Ah, there she is.

Here it is with my (somewhat veiny?) hand, to give you a better idea of the hugeness of it.

Needless to say, I am eternally grateful to my husband for satisfying my egg craving for this year. What a wonderful man to understand the importance of such things, and to make sure my candy needs are met. In case I had forgotten why I married him, chocolate and peanut butter in a giant egg shape has reminded me.

In Your Easter Bonnet, With All The Frills Upon It

A little bit of our Easter decor!

How was everyone's Easter weekend? We had a wonderful time. Our Easter observance really began on Thursday with Maundy Thursday service, then Good Friday service on Friday. We've been going to a Lutheran church not too far from our apartment, right along Central Park West. The Good Friday tenebrae service is always one of my top two favorite church services of the year, and this year didn't disappoint. It was really beautiful. The hymn "Were You There" gets me every time.

And after church both days, Eric and I went out to dinner together. It's not like us to eat out two nights in a row, but we were just enjoying being out of the house together so much we didn't want to go right back home after church. We tried two new local places, one Italian and one Mexican, and both were tasty. We almost had a disaster at the Mexican restaurant though - the paper lining the basket for our chips (and salsa) caught fire in the little candle on the table! It went up in flames and I dumped my whole glass of water on it to put it out. We ended up needing Eric's water on it too. Then we had a soggy table. Embarrassing and messy! Such adventures.

Anyway, I digress. Our Easter celebration continued on Saturday night. We watched a good bit of "The Ten Commandments" on TV, and then put in "Jesus Christ Superstar," one of my favorites. We dyed our Easter eggs while we watched that. They turned out beautifully, if I do say so myself!

Handsome husband. I love that he dyes eggs with me!

Achilles helping. He's not one to ever be left out of any fun, if he can help it.

Ta-da! Fancy, yes?

For Easter Sunday, we had a very average Easter day planned: church in the morning, then dinner together. Nothing out of the ordinary. So, we got up and went to church. I was grumbling the whole time I was getting ready about the weather. It was finally sunny, but the temperature was still in the low 40s and it was VERY windy, so it felt like it was in the 30s. That meant no cute little Easter dress for me, and I LOVE Easter dresses. So, bummer.

Our Eastery family

The church service was lovely, and the church was decorated beautifully. I love the celebration of the Easter Sunday service - the lillies, horns, the hymns, the "He is Risen! Christ is Risen, indeed!" exchanges. I know I've discussed this before, but that always makes me think of my Pastor grandfather getting the congregation all fired up on Easter Sunday. He was great at it!

After church we decided to walk over towards the East side. When Eric was walking to work last week, he saw that they were planting all kinds of spring flowers on the Promenade at Rockefeller Center, and we wanted to make our way over there to take some pictures. We decided to cut through Central Park on our way to see some of the blossoming trees. I wouldn't have minded if the weather was a little warmer for our walk, but it was still beautiful!

When we made it out of the Park and onto Fifth Avenue, we realized that we had stumbled upon a long-standing New York Easter tradition that we had not known about: the New York Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival. Now, we tend to try to stay on top of the NY goings-on, and it's not often that something like this slips by under our radar. I'm not sure how it happened this time, but needless to say I'm so glad we decided to walk over to Rockefeller Center because otherwise we would have missed some Easter bonnet craziness.

Apparently the Easter Parade dates back to the 1800s, when the New York City social elite would attend church at one Fifth Avenue churches, then parade down Fifth afterwards to show off their Easter finery. The less well-to-do folks would come to see what the latest fashions were. This tradition even inspired a song by Irving Berlin entitled "Easter Pardade," the lyrics of which provided me with my post title today. If you are interested in watching Judy Garland and Fred Astaire sing this song, click here.

These days, the parade isn't so much a chance to show off your legitimate fashion sense as much as it is a springtime Halloween. The parade isn't really much of a parade at all - rather, they just block off about 8 blocks along Fifth Avenue and people mill about during the day. Some people wear outrageous hats and outfits, and others (like us!) just stop by to gawk and take photos. The hats were so amazing! I can't even describe them. I just kept thinking to myself, "Wow! Even EASTER is New Yorky in New York!" Hopefully the pictures below will give you an idea of the madness.

You might wonder, which crazy Easter person was my favorite? Well, let me show you. It was Bunny Shrub Man:

Yes, that's a real person in there, under all that leafy bunny-ness. See? Here is walking down the street with his flower pot friend:

I know I posted a photo of a bunny shrub from Tavern on the Green earlier, and I was afraid all these bunny bushes might get confusing. So I made this handy diagram so there's no confusion:

And yes, next year I do plan to have a hat. I think I will make it myself and it will be throwing up spring all over itself. I can hardly wait. And I plan to bring Achilles with me, in his Easter bunny ears. It will be a sensation!

We did finally make it over to Rockefeller Center, which was beautiful, although very crowded, as one might expect. We took a few pictures then made our way home. Our nice Easter morning walk had been so much more than we had expected!

When we got home we started the afternoon off by torturing the dog. You all saw last year's picture of him in his bunny ears, but we decided to take a 2009 version. HE HATED IT. Poor thing, it really was torture. Don't feel too bad for him, though. He was treated to an Einstein Brothers doggie bagel (his favorite treat) afterwards, so life was good in his eyes.

I'm cracking up in this picture, obviously. But pay no attention to me - please look at the dog's face. He's so WIDE-EYED! Poor thing. We've never seen him make that face before!

This is one of the reasons I'm cracking up in the previous picture. As you may have noticed, Achilles' REAL ears are rather large as it is, so when you cover them with bunny ears, the real ears have to go somewhere. And they're so big they stick out the bottom of the hat!

He is plotting our demise, and wishing you a Happy easter all at the same time.

Was it all worth it for this doggie bagel?

For dinner we made a pork tenderloin (a first for me), hash brown potato casserole (a classic favorite), and peas, with dark chocolate cake for dessert. Everything was delicious!

We spent the rest of the afternoon making phone calls to family, relaxing, and watching a movie together. A nice, quiet end to a wonderful weekend!

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter as well!

He Is Risen!

"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him."
- Mark 16:6

HAPPY EASTER! I hope you all are having a day filled with joy and celebration. Eric and I are going to church this morning, then cooking a meal of pork tenderloin, hash brown potato casserole, bread, veggies, and Easter eggs. As usual on holidays, we miss our families and hope you all are enjoying your Easter Sunday.

At the very least, I hope you are enjoying your Easter more than Achilles enjoyed his last year:

HAPPY EASTER!

A Sneak Painting Preview

It seems that I'm always slacking with sharing photos of our apartment all set up. It took me forever to post pictures of our last apartment, and I don't seem to be any rush this time around, either.

This time, my excuse is that it still isn't quite put together. We've had a lot of things going on since moving in here, including my mom's visit and travels back and forth to Florida for Kristina's wedding festivities. We still don't have pictures hung, and have a few more improvements we want to make before sharing our home with the world. But, we're finally making some good progress in that department, and it's my goal to be sharing pictures with you within the next week or two.

One of the things we have been working on is painting - the first time we've ever painted our home! Last weekend we painted the dining room together, and then on Monday I painted the living room. We're still considering painting the kitchen (I'm dying for a red kitchen), but that's up in the air. Whenever we move out, we'll have to paint everything back to white, and I'm afraid with all the appliance-moving that will have to happen to paint the kitchen, it will be more trouble than it's worth. As it is, the painting we did do is sort of an act of faith that we'll actually be in one place for a while. We want to get our money and effort's worth out of it before we paint over it and move on!

You'll get to see the finished product when I post the full apartment pictures, but in the mean time, here is a small preview, of the painting fun from last weekend:

The before picture

We decided to paint a family portrait instead of a solid color. I'm clearly the artist of the family, so I took charge.

Ah, well, my mural was fun while it lasted.

Hope you all are enjoying your Easter weekend!

Spring Fever

Crocuses in Central Park

I've got a bad case of spring fever.

In this post I'm going to share pictures we took in Central Park on Sunday, when the temperature got up into the 60's and the sun was shining. As I was uploading the pictures and preparing them to post this morning, however, I watched the sky darken outside my window and...get this....SNOW STARTED TO FALL. Now, I'm not so far removed from my childhood in Ohio that I have some crazy notion that once spring "officially" starts, days of snow and cold are over. I remember Easter Sundays that included snow, or at least winter coats. But boy, was I hopeful that would not be the case this year.

The snow this morning only lasted a few minutes and then the sun came back out, so it wasn't a total catastrophe. But that doesn't change the fact that I am so ready for spring that it's not even funny. I'm encouraged by the blossoming trees and flowers I've started to see, but I continue to be disheartened by the fact that I still have to wear my winter coat more often than not. I am also currently disheartened, as I type these very words, because....the sky is now dark again and the snow is back. Again. What is happening here?!

Anyway, maybe posting these cheerful spring pictures will lift my snow-induced funk. Things really are starting to bloom, which is so beautiful to see. That is one thing I love about living back up north. There is no spring in Florida - it goes straight from winter to summer (and sometimes back and forth between the two for a bit). I love the gradually warmer weather, the budding flowers, blooming trees, the feeling of hope for a new year and warmer temperatures. Sunday was really our first nice spring day, so we took Achilles for a walk in Central Park to enjoy it. Needless to say, everyone else in the city had the same idea, and the park was CROWDED. Still wonderful, though!

My favorite picture of the afternoon - my boys on the Bridge!

Look at the crowds! People everywhere.

Here's hoping that weather like Sunday's becomes the norm pretty quickly. I've had quite enough of winter!
