Disney, Pt. 2: The Dark Side 10k

Happy Star Wars Day, friends! May the 4th be with you!

And speaking of Star Wars, let's talk Dark Side 10k!

As I mentioned yesterday, the impetus for our entire Disney trip this time around was the inaugural Star Wars Dark Side 10k. We heard about this new Disney race last fall and were instantly intrigued, and I considered trying to do the 5k, even though I was currently not running even a little bit, ever. But a fun Star Wars-themed Disney race was intriguing.

So, I thought about it some more. Maybe I could actually start running. I was looking for a way to start getting in some regular exercise, but I wasn't having much luck with anything I was trying. The main reason for that was, admittedly, my selfishness and/or laziness: every morning I would wake up swearing I would work out as soon as the kids went down for their naps that afternoon, but by the time naptime finally arrived, I was so in need of a break I would instead opt for working at my computer and eating mint Oreos. Needless to say, that was not an especially effective "get healthy" strategy.

But, we were going for walks every evening with the kids after their naps, so I thought, "what if we just went a little faster?" We bought a used double jogging stroller last year, so I thought that maybe if we put it to use and basically just picked up the pace of our walks, maybe I would do it. It wouldn't take time out of my precious little free time, I didn't have to wake up early or go to bed late to get some exercise in, and it was something we could all do together. I decided to give it a go.

And I decided to challenge myself right off the bat. I didn't want to just do a 5k (3.1 miles). I knew that on any given day I could go out and walk that. I wanted to do something that I'd have to actually train for a bit, something that would force me to get out there and keep working at it. And that's how Eric and I came to sign up for the Dark Side 10k this April.

So, I began running. Eric was an excellent coach and motivator, and with his guidance I ran my first 5k on New Year's Eve, and then we really focused on the 10k. In total, I ran 100 miles to train for the 10k and lost 16 pounds (since January 1) in the process. I felt great! And, I was actually enjoying (most of) my runs with my family by my side.

Race Day was April 16th, and I felt confident going into it. Eric and I got up at 3:30 in the morning, got dressed in our Star Wars running attire and went out to the starting line at Epcot. (My mom stayed behind at the hotel with the kids.)

He's the storm trooper to my Darth Vader!

We walked out to our corral at 5:00 a.m. and waited for our group's turn to start. Things got underway at 5:30, but, being in one of the back corrals, we actually got started about 15-20 minutes later. But, we finally had our turn at the starting line, and we were off!

Here goes nothing!

At the starting line, ready to run!

The course we were about to run!

Just before the first mile marker we came across our first celebrity photo op: R2D2! We planned to stop for all the photos, so we pulled off to the side to join the line for a 20-minute wait. It killed our momentum a bit, sure, but we were running a Disney race for this very reason: all the fun little "extras" along the way. Not long after we got in line, however, they closed it down behind us and didn't let anyone else in to wait. All those poor people in the back two corrals never even had a chance at it!

R2D2!

Mile One is complete!

Mile Two took us into Epcot for a bit, then out along Disney's Boardwalk. It was here that things started to get really congested. The course was narrow and there were far too many people in general, plus runner's etiquette had gone out the window and people were just walking across the entire width of the course. We were jammed in there and there was no way to actually run. All you could do was walk with the masses. I found that very frustrating, because I trained to run 6.2 miles, not walk it! But, we pressed on, running whenever we had a little opening and grumbling to ourselves when we didn't.

Welcome to Epcot!

Mile Two is complete!

Crowds of walkers

Mile Three took us through the gates into Hollywood Studios, where we paused for a photo with Darth Vader. Of course, our slow walking pace meant that race staff were rushing us along by the time we got there, warning that we were mere minutes away from being swept off the course if we didn't get moving. We rushed through our photo op and then picked up some speed. (It was in Hollywood Studios that my FitBit alerted me I had already reached my 10,000 step goal for the day - by 7:00 a.m.! Neeldess to say, I had never done that before.)

OMG how embarrassing. We totally wore the same thing.

Mile Three is complete! Nearly halfway there!

By Tower of Terror in Hollywood Studios

Miles Four and Five took us along the roads between Hollywood Studios and Wide World of Sports. It was still heavily congested with slower-moving crowds, but every now and then we could find an opening to run if we ran off-road on the grass. Not ideal, but at least we were moving.

Mile Four is complete!

Cross Mile Five off, too!

There were more photo ops along the way (you could sit on a speeder and/or in the Emperor's throne, plus there were a myriad characters to pose with), but we only stopped for a quick selfie with a Rebel pilot before enjoying some open road and heading in towards the finish line. When we passed the sixth mile marker, we knew the end was near!

Quick selfie to show our support for the Rebellion

Mile Six is done - we're almost there!

What a feeling of satisfaction to cross that finish line! We did it!

Crossing the finish line!

We did it!

My medal!

We got our medals, water and snacks and took our official finish photo:

Yay, us!

Then, we checked out some of the photo ops they had set up at the post-race festival. There were eight different scenes set up: Boba Fett with Han Solo in carbonite; rathtars from The Force Awakens; BB-8; Darth Maul; storm troopers by Kylo Ren's interrogation chair; Captain Phasma; Darth Vader; and Jabba the Hut. However, by the time we arrived at the festival it was already 8:00, and they were closing everything down at 9:00 to clear out the parking lot before the race expo opened up for the day at the Wide World of Sports. So, we only took the time to wait in one line (we probably could have done two, but that's it), and again, I was left feeling sorry for the poor souls behind us who would probably miss out on this opportunity, too.

Photo ops at the post-race festival

Jabba the Hut!

But, we did it! I was feeling pretty good!

Yay!

That is, until we tried to get back to our car. For whatever reason, the race began at Epcot and ended at Wide World of Sports. That meant everybody parked at Epcot and then had to take a shuttle bus back to Epcot to get their cars. I don't know exactly what went awry here, because Disney usually seems to have its life together, but this was a DISASTER. We waited in a line for a half an hour and barely made any progress at all. We were still so far away, we couldn't even see where the busses were picking up. I mean, we were probably six long line-snakes (if that makes sense) away from even being in the epically long straight line leading to the busses. There was starting to be talk of them not even guaranteeing that they would have buses back to Epcot for everybody. Staff members were strongly advising people to instead take one of the buses going to one of the resorts and then take the resort shuttle to Epcot. It was a nightmare.

We decided to heed the advice of staff and hopped on a bus going to the Contemporary Resort. However, we waited a long time to leave, then luckily, we had a pretty aggressive bus driver or we would've been stuck in traffic until the end of time. We did still have to stop at Fort Wilderness which made it a very long, roundabout bus ride, but we eventually made it to Contemporary. From there, we hopped on the monorail back to Epcot and fianlly were reunited with our car. We took our last photo at the post-race festival at 8:30 a.m. and were back to our car at 10:40 a.m. Just ridiculous.

But, we made it back and we completed the race! I was exhausted but we still had an afternoon at Hollywood Studios to look forward to. That will be coming up next!

As for me and running, we took some time off when we got back home after Disney, but we're back at it now. And, I signed up for another race: The Disney Half Marathon in January. I have officially lost my mind, folks. But, it's happening! I knew I needed another challenge to force myself to get back out there and work, so that's what's on the calendar. Get excited!

Disney, Pt. 1: Star Wars Kids' Races

We're back from an awesome long weekend at Disney (two weeks ago already!), and I have so much to share! We had such a blast.

We had planned to drive down the morning of Friday, April 15th, but that week we got a little eager and decided it would make life much easier to just go down Thursday after Eric got off work. So, I spent Thursday morning running around like a crazy person getting everything ready and loading the car before picking Ellie up from school and springing the news on her that we were Disney-bound a day early. (I think she was excited, but she did express a wish that my after-school "surprise" for her had been a Belle dress, so who can say.) As soon as Eric got home, we piled into the car and off we went!

Here we come, Disney!

We stayed in the same hotel where we stayed for marathon weekend last year, and it was great. We had three bedrooms, a giant jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom, a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. They also had a pool that ended up being great for the kids, but more on that later. We arrived at the hotel with plenty of time to settle in and let the kids run around like lunatics for a while before putting them to bed.

Now that the kids are in bed, Mama's vacation can begin.

On Friday morning, we got up and ready and headed out to Wide World of Sports for the first running event of the weekend: the Star Wars Kids' Races. I should backtrack and explain that the entire reason for this trip was the inaugural Star Wars Dark Side running event. Disneyland does a Light Side run, and this was the first year Disney World hosted a Dark Side counterpart. We signed up for the 10k in the fall, when I had barely ever run at all in my life. I'll share more about that decision and how it has turned out for me in my next post, but we kicked off our entire weekend with a race for the kids, followed by a 10k for the parents the next day. Exciting!

My mom and Gary met us at the race expo at Wide World of Sports, where we retrieved our numbers and t-shirts and perused the goods for sale for a bit. We also snapped some pictures and got the kids ready for their race.

Getting the kids ready

They look ready to run!

We're ready, too!

The kids' races kicked off at 11:30 a.m., starting with the 100m dash for the one-to-three-year-old division. So, E.J. was up first! Eric accompanied him on the track, and when his turn came, he darted off. He did fizzle out a little bit after the opening stretch, but he picked it back up in time to cross the finish line like a rock star. And thus, the first medal of the weekend was in hand!

Go, E.J.!

Heading towards the finish line!

Ellie went next, in the 200m dash for the four-to-seven-year-olds. To our surprise, she told Eric she wanted to run it by herself! To be honest, we expected E.J. to be the more independent one on race day, but Ellie surprised and impressed us immensely. She lined up by herself, while Eric kept and eye on her and the rest of us waited down the track for her. The "solo runners" came out with some speed (they looked like little lightning bolts compared to the wee ones from the previous group!), and I was afraid I would miss Ellie in the crowd. In fact, I nearly did miss her, because just as I gave up looking, thinking she must be in the next heat, there she was: back there behind them all, running steadily at her own pace, just rocking it. That little girl ran the entire 200m, all by herself. As her parent, it was truly amazing to watch. It was not what I expected of her, but I should know by now that I should expect anything because all she needs to do is get it in her head that she's going to do something, and it's as good as done. She ran the whole way. As she passed the D.J. booth, they called out, "Let's hear it for our princess in pink!" to her, and the "Jedi" they had along the course came out to run with her for the last bit. Because she had let all the other kids run ahead of her, she had the stage all to herself for her big performance and she killed it.

Here she comes!

We're so proud of her!

Look at these two running, and also, tell me the music they ran to wasn't so perfect:

Proud mama over here, folks.

Nice job, kids!

After the race, we hung out a little bit longer. Wanting to keep her athletically impressive streak going, Ellie asked to try her hand at a little obstacle course they had set up for the kids, and again, she was awesome.

Go, Ellie!

She's a natural!

Before we could head back to the hotel for lunch, we had one last objective: take a picture with BB-8! He was stationed inside a tent with roughly an hour wait, but we couldn't pass up the chance to meet the latest droid sensation. Luckily, they had Star Wars clips playing on big screens on both sides of the line, so the kids hung out with Grammy and danced, snacked and watched Star Wars while Eric and I waited in line for our turn.

A real live celebrity!

Our first character photo of the weekend!

Then, it was back to the hotel for lunch and naps for the kids. Gary headed home but my mom stayed, so she could be our much-appreciated childcare while Eric and I ran the next morning.

On the bus back to our car from the event. I'm ready for a nap!

After naps, we went out to Disney Springs for a quick shopping trip.

Then, back home for dinner and early bedtime for the next round of runners!

December 2015

We had a really excellent month in December! It was jam-packed with fun things to do, mixed with some good old-fashioned holiday travel. Take a look!

As for general life stuff, E.J. and I enjoyed some nice weather bike rides...

Happy little biker down by the river

...Ellie perfected her trademark "hunch-and-pout" (threenagers, am I right?)...

We see this sight daily.

...and the kids enjoyed some quality reading time with Daddy.

E.J. is still working on the "sit still for books" concept.

Ellie also kept us on our toes with a couple different illnesses, one of which sent us to the ER during a St. Pete visit and the other resulted in a renal ultrasound at the children's hospital here in Jax, but both ended up being nothing to worry about. And, she handled both like a pro! The kid rocks at doctors.

Giving her new stuffed puppy a checkup at the hospital in St. Pete; and eating her reward for impressive behavior after her ultrasound, with new purple turtle (a gift from the ultrasound tech) close at hand.

As for other (more fun) events, we kicked off the month with a Star Wars-themed mini-birthday party for Eric (which has thrown both of our children into a full-fledged Star Wars obsession now).

Happy Star Wars birthday, Eric!

That same night, we trimmed our trusty little Christmas tree and adorned it with a brand new light-up angel.

It was a family effort!

Of course, we took the kids to see Santa, as one does in December. (EJ cried the whole time except for this exact moment. Shout-out to the photographer with the quick trigger finger!)

2015 Santa photo! I just can't with these sweeties.

We also attended the tree lighting in San Marco Square, which included a very nice little program put on by local school children.

The San Marco Christmas tree in Balis Park

We also went to Holidays in Hemming Park, which had "snow" for the poor, deprived Florida kids to play in. In all honestly it was a pitiful substitute for the real thing, but my particular poor, deprived Florida kid loved it, so it works.

Snow!!!!

We also had to stop by Christmas in Avondale again this year, and once again had a blast munching on popcorn, making Christmas crafts, dancing at a silent disco and goofing off in the photobooth.

Christmas in Avondale

We went to Sweet Pete's Winter Wonderland that included more crafts, sweets, storytime, another (slightly more realistic but still not really) fake snow encounter, and a meet-and-greet with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, about which one child was more excited than the other.

Fun at Sweet Pete's

We went back to Hemming Park yet again for ForceFest, which brought Ellie face-to-face with her current favorite celebrity.

That child loves her some R2D2.

We also had lots of visitors, including Papa...

At Jacksonville Beach

...Aunt Heather...

The kids are obsessed with Heather's white noise app on her phone. Who wouldn't be, though?

...and my mom, Kelley and Cathy, who all came up for Ellie's ballet recital. And as for the recital, well, it...went. I'll have more about that in another post because it very much warrants its own post.

Top Ellie on stage at her recital. Not sure which one she is? Oh, she's the one refusing to sit in favor of standing and sulking. You can't miss her.
Bottom: E.J. looking quite dapper for the occasion; and Ellie's fan club, all of whom traveled four hours to watch her stand motionless on a stage. Bless them.

While my mom and Heather were in town, we had our own little "Grammy Christmas" with a gift exchange and dinner.

Grammy Christmas!

They also stuck around for Ellie's school Christmas program, which also...went.

For heavens sake.

On the plus side, Ellie may not have put on much of a show, but E.J. looked like this:

He just needs to stop.

So, there's that.

Heather and I also took the kids to the library for a pajama storytime. They each brought stuffed animals with them, and then the stuffed animals had a sleepover at the library! When we picked them up the next day, we were given a page of pictures of all the shenanigans our buddies got into overnight.

Pajama storytime - we brought the Grinch!

Heather also held down the fort for an evening so Eric and I could go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens on opening night! We loved it!

Star Wars nerd-ing it up!

Ellie and I had some holiday fun together, making Christmas cut-out cookies...

Messy hands!

...and going to see The Nutcracker! It was Ellie's first time and she did great. At one point she looked at me and said, "It's just so beautiful." Naturally, we had to stop by Target afterwards to get her a Nutcracker of her own.

A great girls' day out!

We spent about a week in St. Pete around Christmas, and on our way down there we stopped at my mom's house for a day. We splashed in her fountain, played with her toys, and the kids got a couple more gifts.

Fun at Grammy's house

In St. Pete, we had lots of fun hanging out with Papa and Heather (including making a gingerbread house and gingerbread men)...

More Christmas fun

...had a lovely Christmas lasagna and gift exchange with Eric's siblings at Kelley's house...

Lots of fun at Aunt Kelley's!

...and checked out the lights in downtown St. Pete, giving Ellie a chance to try her hand (feet?) at "glice " skating (NOT a hit).

Christmas festivities in downtown St. Pete

On Christmas Eve, we had a nice dinner with my dad and Heather then went to church together, where the kids were outfitted as an angel and a shepherd and given glow-sticks to hold during the candelit singing of "Silent Night."

Christmas Eve 2015

On Christmas morning, we opened gifts at Papa's house.

Opening gifts on Christmas morning, including Ellie's new favorite outfit from Aunt Heather

That afternoon, we went for an amazing dinner at Eric's Aunt Patty and Uncle Steve's house, and had a really wonderful time with the whole family.

Great times with family!

After the holiday, we came back to Jacksonville to do our own little Christmas celebration at home. We kicked things off with ZooLights, including a Storm Trooper encounter (Star Wars is EVERYWHERE) and some s'mores.

Santa was also there, and Mrs. Claus even got E.J. to smile!

Back at home, we scattered our reindeer food on the lawn, put out cookies and milk for Santa and sent the children off to bed in adorable coordinating Christmas pajamas for our belated family Christmas Eve.

Cuuuuuute.

Then, Santa went to work while Eric and I relaxed with shrimp, wine, and A Christmas Story.

Christmas Eve at our house!

Our belated Christmas morning was so nice, with the kids each receiving some new favorite presents (cowboy dress-up and a stuffed R2D2 for Ellie; an Arlo the Dinosaur rocker and new football for E.J.). We spent some time at the park that afternoon, finished up all our Advent calendars (Ellie was really into that this year) and had a little birthday party for Jesus.

Christmas Day!

We closed out our 2015 with a really excellent New Year's Eve, starting with the Noon Year's Eve celebration at the zoo. We made crafts and joined the masses for an apple juice toast as the ball dropped on the Great Lawn at noon.

Happy Noon Year!

That afternoon, I ran my very first 5k! I'll have to post more about running, because by the way, I do that now. Eric was a great coach and the kids did great in the jogging stroller. The course was very pleasant, through downtown and along the river, and I was greeted at the finish line with a medal and a beer. Lesson learned: I will run for beer.

My first 5k!

That evening, we did an early countdown and another apple juice toast with the kids before putting them to bed (thanks to Netflix for offering an on-demand countdown!).

Cheers to the new year!

Then, Eric and I finished out the year with champagne, TV, and a view of the Jacksonville fireworks at midnight right from our front yard.

Happy New Year!

And that, my friends, is how you end a year.

The W. family is ready for 2016!
