Farewell, 2020

Happy New Year, friends! We did it! We made it to the 2020 finish line.

Every year I make a retrospective video and spend some time reflecting on the past 365 days. Thinking back on 2020 has been...conflicting, I suppose? To be honest, I'm sort of at a loss for the right word to really summarize what this year has been.

There were, obviously, struggles. A lot of anxiety, a lot of worry, a lot of uncertainty, a lot of frustration. A lot of constantly second guessing choices made and wondering if we're doing the right thing for ourselves, our family and our community. It was a year of canceled plans and isolation from family and friends. It was a year of loss and grief - we have been fortunate to not lose anyone to the virus itself, but we did lose my grandfather and were unable to mourn him together as a family as we otherwise would have. And so many have lost so much more. It was also a year of unrest and hate and hurt, of arguing and division. There were times when things nearly felt hopeless.

But, to be fair, our family had it a lot easier than many, and for that I am exceedingly grateful - Eric already worked from home, and his work has continued to keep him very busy; I'm able to be home with the kids and we have the space, time and resources to devote to virtual school, plus they attend a great school with teachers who work hard to support them; AND my children are unicorn children who are great, cooperative, hardworking virtual learners. I am so grateful that we were able to adjust to pandemic life as easily as we did.

And, I realized some time ago that even in the hardest times, if you take a step back and look closely, there's beauty in the situation: true, pure, selfless, love-thy-neighbor type of beauty. Today, I am also enjoying remembering all the good things that have happened in the world around us this past year.

When schools initially closed, zoos and museums and people all over hopped online to keep children entertained and engaged. We have been able to "visit" places and watch performances from all over the country that we otherwise would never have seen (including our nieces' and nephew's piano recital this month!). Locally, people drew rainbows on their sidewalks for children to find when they went outside, and built scavenger hunts throughout the neighborhood.

When grocery store shelves were bare, local restaurants sold groceries to the public to fill the gaps. For some time we bought our chicken and pasta from Maple Street Biscuit Company and our eggs by the dozen from Metro Diner. People rushed to fill a need where they saw one and make things easier for their community.

When the CDC started recommending masks, crafters across the country ran their sewing machines ragged making them for their loved ones or to donate to local people in need. When elastic was hard to find, they were cutting up fitted bedsheets to use that elastic for ear straps. Creativity for a noble purpose!

When I asked for help with a drive-by birthday parade for Ellie and birthday video for E.J., I was overwhelmed by the response of our friends and family. It was so touching to see everyone so willing to give of their time to make the day special for our kids.

It often felt like you had to dig through the negative to find it, but if you paid attention, positive stories were plentiful: teachers giving their absolute all to virtual students. Daily applause for healthcare workers. People using their talents to entertain their neighbors from their driveways. Breweries shifting course to produce hand sanitizer, and athletic uniform companies making masks. Zoom lifting time limits on holidays so people could virtually celebrate with distant family and friends without restriction. Examples abound of people giving of themselves to others, trying to ease the burden for their neighbors and bring joy where they could.

And, this year may have looked very different, but there was something kind of fun in coming up with new ways to celebrate the usual events. We were forced out of our rut of tradition, to think creatively about what really is important to us and how best to celebrate it. If nothing else, it was a breath of fresh air, and maybe we even figured out some fun new things to add to our celebrations in the future.

As a family, we slowed down and enjoyed each other more: we started walking together every evening; we started reading the Harry Potter books together; Eric learned magic to entertain us; the kids put on a full-blown "concert" (complete with program) for me for Mother's Day; we spent many nights watching movies together in our backyard. And, we got a puppy!

I hope 2020 has not been too cruel to you, my friends. I hope you're also able to look back and see the beauty amidst the mess. And I hope that 2021 leaves the mess behind and brings you simply joy, good health, hope and togetherness.

Happy New Year.

Farewell, 2018

Another year has come and gone, and all my great intentions to get back to record-keeping in blog format have once again fallen by the wayside. Maybe next year! I do miss this old blog - writing is therapeutic for me and perhaps I'll resolve to do more of it in 2019.

Our 2018 was really a pretty good one on the whole. We did some great traveling, including a trip to New York City (kid-free!) for Eric and me in June, an extended vacation at my dad's house over the summer, and a two-week road trip that took us to Georgia, Alabama, Illinois, Ohio, Washington D.C. and North Carolina. E.J. started VPK and Ellie is rocking first grade. E.J. is still playing tee-ball (and Ellie plans to join him in the spring!) and Ellie has continued her ballet, in addition to worship dance at church. Both kids also sing in the choir.

Eric got a great new promotion at work and is now the Director of Policy at his non-profit, which is fantastic. He loves the work he does and I love that. He did a fair bit of work-related travel this year, which the kids don't mind too much because he always brings them treats when he returns. He also coached E.J.'s tee-ball and got involved with a mens' group at church.

I ramped up my running this year, having run 400 miles in 2018! That's more than I had run in the previous two years combined, so I kind of killed it. I ran two half marathons this year, too, and have another on the agenda for February. I also finished out the year with a ton of jury work, which was a nice way to end an otherwise quiet (work-wise) year. Other than that, it has been a lot of shuttling kids to and fro, moms' groups and general life upkeep for me.

Unfortunately, the final member of our family brings a sad update. Our sweet pup Achilles passed away unexpectedly at the beginning of November, just a little over a month after his 15th birthday. It has been a tough loss for our family, but I hope to write a fuller post in tribute to that sweet (and psycho) pooch as soon as I can.

Overall, however, I'm looking back on 2018 with peace and looking forward to 2019 with anticipation. We don't have a ton of stuff definitively planned for the new year yet, so it feels like a little bit of a blank slate. It's going to be fun!

I wish you all the best in the coming year, friends. Let's make it a good one.

Farewell, 2017

The end of another year! And, the first in a long time that hasn't been documented in excrutiating detail here. Alas!

This year was not without its challenges, including surgery for both kids (adenoidectomies for all and ear tubes for Ellie), Hurricane Irma, insane work schedules and a car accident. However, on the whole it was a good one - we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary and some big birthdays, Ellie started kindergarten and E.J. started preschool (and t-ball!). We traveled to the Cayman Islands and North Carolina, enjoyed annual passes at Disney World and Kennedy Space Center, and had lots of fun around home. We enjoyed each other and made some great memories.

This new year is also an interesting one because for the first time in a long time, we're not only ending the year in the same place/job/community as we started it, but we don't have any foreseeable changes on the horizon. Stability! What a cool feeling.

Happy New Year, friends. I hope 2018 brings you all good things.

Farewell, 2016

Here we are again, face-to-face with another new year! I know my posting has been sporadic at best lately, but I certainly couldn't let tonight pass by without reflecting on the year that is now so near its end.

2016 has gotten a pretty bad rap in the last few months, seemingly at least in the general public opinion. I can get on board with that to an extent - 2016 certainly brought some struggles for friends and family, our country seems to be in a very unsettled place, and personally, my kids have been non-stop sick (leaving me non-stop stressed) for the past two months. So, I'm ready to start fresh and hope 2017 ushers in a healthier vibe!

But for our family, really, 2016 has been a pretty great year. In addition to all the usual fun of travel, birthdays and other memory-making, 2016 brought answers to questions that have been hanging in the air for us for years. Eric has finally found a career that both satisfies him and challenges him. For the first time, he can envision doing this work long-term and I love hearing him talk excitedly about it. That answer brought about another: we're staying Jacksonville indefinitely. We've moved to our house that we love, joined our church, and are settling in and making friends. At last!

It's a strange feeling to be sitting here on New Year's Eve and not thinking and writing about all the potential for change that lies ahead of us in the new year. I suppose that potential is always there, to an extent, but for the first time in many years, I think I know where we will be next year at this time and what we will be doing. Our big uncertainties have been resolved and now we're just enjoying the life that is coming together for us.

VIDEO: A look back at our year in 2016

2017 does promise some big things for us, too: our tenth wedding anniversary; Ellie's fifth birthday (WHAT) and the start of kindergarten; E.J. starting preschool; a trip to the Cayman Islands; several weddings to attend; increased work responsibility for Eric. And that's just what we know about! I think it's going to be great.

So, friends, regardless of how you feel about 2016, I hope tonight you feel at peace and filled with hope for the year to come. It's a fresh start! Let's enjoy, shall we?

Happy 2017, all!

December 2015

We had a really excellent month in December! It was jam-packed with fun things to do, mixed with some good old-fashioned holiday travel. Take a look!

As for general life stuff, E.J. and I enjoyed some nice weather bike rides...

Happy little biker down by the river

...Ellie perfected her trademark "hunch-and-pout" (threenagers, am I right?)...

We see this sight daily.

...and the kids enjoyed some quality reading time with Daddy.

E.J. is still working on the "sit still for books" concept.

Ellie also kept us on our toes with a couple different illnesses, one of which sent us to the ER during a St. Pete visit and the other resulted in a renal ultrasound at the children's hospital here in Jax, but both ended up being nothing to worry about. And, she handled both like a pro! The kid rocks at doctors.

Giving her new stuffed puppy a checkup at the hospital in St. Pete; and eating her reward for impressive behavior after her ultrasound, with new purple turtle (a gift from the ultrasound tech) close at hand.

As for other (more fun) events, we kicked off the month with a Star Wars-themed mini-birthday party for Eric (which has thrown both of our children into a full-fledged Star Wars obsession now).

Happy Star Wars birthday, Eric!

That same night, we trimmed our trusty little Christmas tree and adorned it with a brand new light-up angel.

It was a family effort!

Of course, we took the kids to see Santa, as one does in December. (EJ cried the whole time except for this exact moment. Shout-out to the photographer with the quick trigger finger!)

2015 Santa photo! I just can't with these sweeties.

We also attended the tree lighting in San Marco Square, which included a very nice little program put on by local school children.

The San Marco Christmas tree in Balis Park

We also went to Holidays in Hemming Park, which had "snow" for the poor, deprived Florida kids to play in. In all honestly it was a pitiful substitute for the real thing, but my particular poor, deprived Florida kid loved it, so it works.

Snow!!!!

We also had to stop by Christmas in Avondale again this year, and once again had a blast munching on popcorn, making Christmas crafts, dancing at a silent disco and goofing off in the photobooth.

Christmas in Avondale

We went to Sweet Pete's Winter Wonderland that included more crafts, sweets, storytime, another (slightly more realistic but still not really) fake snow encounter, and a meet-and-greet with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, about which one child was more excited than the other.

Fun at Sweet Pete's

We went back to Hemming Park yet again for ForceFest, which brought Ellie face-to-face with her current favorite celebrity.

That child loves her some R2D2.

We also had lots of visitors, including Papa...

At Jacksonville Beach

...Aunt Heather...

The kids are obsessed with Heather's white noise app on her phone. Who wouldn't be, though?

...and my mom, Kelley and Cathy, who all came up for Ellie's ballet recital. And as for the recital, well, it...went. I'll have more about that in another post because it very much warrants its own post.

Top Ellie on stage at her recital. Not sure which one she is? Oh, she's the one refusing to sit in favor of standing and sulking. You can't miss her.
Bottom: E.J. looking quite dapper for the occasion; and Ellie's fan club, all of whom traveled four hours to watch her stand motionless on a stage. Bless them.

While my mom and Heather were in town, we had our own little "Grammy Christmas" with a gift exchange and dinner.

Grammy Christmas!

They also stuck around for Ellie's school Christmas program, which also...went.

For heavens sake.

On the plus side, Ellie may not have put on much of a show, but E.J. looked like this:

He just needs to stop.

So, there's that.

Heather and I also took the kids to the library for a pajama storytime. They each brought stuffed animals with them, and then the stuffed animals had a sleepover at the library! When we picked them up the next day, we were given a page of pictures of all the shenanigans our buddies got into overnight.

Pajama storytime - we brought the Grinch!

Heather also held down the fort for an evening so Eric and I could go see Star Wars: The Force Awakens on opening night! We loved it!

Star Wars nerd-ing it up!

Ellie and I had some holiday fun together, making Christmas cut-out cookies...

Messy hands!

...and going to see The Nutcracker! It was Ellie's first time and she did great. At one point she looked at me and said, "It's just so beautiful." Naturally, we had to stop by Target afterwards to get her a Nutcracker of her own.

A great girls' day out!

We spent about a week in St. Pete around Christmas, and on our way down there we stopped at my mom's house for a day. We splashed in her fountain, played with her toys, and the kids got a couple more gifts.

Fun at Grammy's house

In St. Pete, we had lots of fun hanging out with Papa and Heather (including making a gingerbread house and gingerbread men)...

More Christmas fun

...had a lovely Christmas lasagna and gift exchange with Eric's siblings at Kelley's house...

Lots of fun at Aunt Kelley's!

...and checked out the lights in downtown St. Pete, giving Ellie a chance to try her hand (feet?) at "glice " skating (NOT a hit).

Christmas festivities in downtown St. Pete

On Christmas Eve, we had a nice dinner with my dad and Heather then went to church together, where the kids were outfitted as an angel and a shepherd and given glow-sticks to hold during the candelit singing of "Silent Night."

Christmas Eve 2015

On Christmas morning, we opened gifts at Papa's house.

Opening gifts on Christmas morning, including Ellie's new favorite outfit from Aunt Heather

That afternoon, we went for an amazing dinner at Eric's Aunt Patty and Uncle Steve's house, and had a really wonderful time with the whole family.

Great times with family!

After the holiday, we came back to Jacksonville to do our own little Christmas celebration at home. We kicked things off with ZooLights, including a Storm Trooper encounter (Star Wars is EVERYWHERE) and some s'mores.

Santa was also there, and Mrs. Claus even got E.J. to smile!

Back at home, we scattered our reindeer food on the lawn, put out cookies and milk for Santa and sent the children off to bed in adorable coordinating Christmas pajamas for our belated family Christmas Eve.

Cuuuuuute.

Then, Santa went to work while Eric and I relaxed with shrimp, wine, and A Christmas Story.

Christmas Eve at our house!

Our belated Christmas morning was so nice, with the kids each receiving some new favorite presents (cowboy dress-up and a stuffed R2D2 for Ellie; an Arlo the Dinosaur rocker and new football for E.J.). We spent some time at the park that afternoon, finished up all our Advent calendars (Ellie was really into that this year) and had a little birthday party for Jesus.

Christmas Day!

We closed out our 2015 with a really excellent New Year's Eve, starting with the Noon Year's Eve celebration at the zoo. We made crafts and joined the masses for an apple juice toast as the ball dropped on the Great Lawn at noon.

Happy Noon Year!

That afternoon, I ran my very first 5k! I'll have to post more about running, because by the way, I do that now. Eric was a great coach and the kids did great in the jogging stroller. The course was very pleasant, through downtown and along the river, and I was greeted at the finish line with a medal and a beer. Lesson learned: I will run for beer.

My first 5k!

That evening, we did an early countdown and another apple juice toast with the kids before putting them to bed (thanks to Netflix for offering an on-demand countdown!).

Cheers to the new year!

Then, Eric and I finished out the year with champagne, TV, and a view of the Jacksonville fireworks at midnight right from our front yard.

Happy New Year!

And that, my friends, is how you end a year.

The W. family is ready for 2016!

Farewell, 2015

Here we are again! Another ending to another year that has passed by in the blink of an eye.

This year had a lot of ups for us, and a couple of major downs. This year we said goodbye to both Eric's mother and grandmother, and it is still hard to believe they're both gone. We have also been struggling with some more uncertainty as to what the future holds for us, though we are confident in God's plan and look forward to finding out what He has in store.

As for the more positive parts of the year:
  • We made two trips to Disney World this year, including one that featured Eric's successful completion of the Disney marathon!
  • After a long battle against solid food, E.J. started eating and now eats constantly (though his nonstop movement keeps him contentedly in the fourth percentile for weight and size 6-9-month pants, the little shrimp!).
  • We celebrated birthdays for all, including a Doc McStuffins-themed third birthday party for Ellie, a Star Wars-themed 33rd birthday party for Eric, a we're-leaving-on-a-two-week-road-trip-in-two-days-themed 33rd birthday mini-celebration for me, and a "Hole in ONE" golf-themed party for E.J.'s very first birthday, which also coincided with a great July Fourth celebration here in Jacksonville. Eric and I also celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary this year! Additionally, we attended celebrations in honor of both my parents' 60th birthdays.
  • The kids racked up their own list of celebrity sightings, including myriad PBS Kids stars and Disney characters ( such as Thomas the Train, Disney princesses, Mickey et al., Sesame Street friends, Daniel Tiger, and Buddy from Dinosaur Train). They loved every second of it!
  • The big summer highlight was our two-week road trip that included stops in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Sesame Place, Pittsburgh, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood at Idlewild, Cleveland for the annual Hesterman reunion, and Pinehurst, NC. The kids were angels and we made some really wonderful family memories!
  • Eric started his third year of teaching (honors students this year!) and Ellie started preschool. She also started ballet lessons after school.
  • We went crazy with Halloween activities and had a blast in this year's family costumes inspired by the Disney movie Tangled!
  • We got to watch Ellie perform in her school Thanksgiving program, and watched her sulk her way through both her ballet recital and Christmas program. At least she has true sulking talent so it was quite a sight to see.
  • We enjoyed very nice holidays in St. Pete, spending both Thanksgiving and Christmas proper with family. We followed that up with our own family Christmas celebration back at home in Jacksonville, which was really special as both kids were very into it this year (Ellie especially).
  • We wrapped up the year today with the VyStar New Year's Eve Run—my very first 5k! Eric has been helping me train and it went so well.
What a year! 2016 promises to be another filled with potential change and, hopefully, continued progress down the path that will lead us to where we are meant to be. In the meantime, we are enjoying each other, our family, and all that Jacksonville has to offer.

May 2016 bring happiness and good health to you and your loved ones, friends. Wishing you all the best!

New Year's Eve 2014

After celebrating our belated Christmas all day, that evening brought a holiday shift: time to switch gears from Christmas to New Year's Eve! Because although we were pretending the date was December 25th, in fact, it was really December 31st. Time to ring in the New Year!

Given that we have two small kids, we didn't exactly have a wild night planned. But, we wanted to do something to commemorate the end of what was one wild year for our family. Eric and Ellie had picked up hats and noisemakers earlier in the day, so we added more festivity to our Christmas pajamas.

Festive children!

E.J. is ready to bid farewell to the year of his birth

Before the kids went to bed, we watched a little on-demand countdown on Netflix, then shared an apple juice toast.

Time for our countdown to the New Year 8:00!

Cheers!

Ellie actually enjoyed the whole thing so much that we repeated the fun a couple of times! Then, it was off to bed for the little ones.

With the kiddos asleep after a long day of family fun, Eric and I opted to relax in front of the fire with some real champagne. We watched the countdown on TV, and reminisced about our New Year's Eve in Times Square (I'm not sure there will ever be a New Year's Eve when we don't reminisce about that one!).

Our New Year's scene

At midnight, we counted down with the rest of the country, then stepped outside onto our front porch to watch what we could see of the Jacksonville fireworks over the river.

It was a quiet way to ring in the New Year, but nice. What a year 2014 was for us, and I can't wait to see what 2015 has in store!

Monday, January 5, 2015

Hello, 2015!

Well, today the holiday break is officially over. Bummer! But, our 2015 is already off to an excellent start.

We had an amazing holiday. We traveled, we ate, we visited, we gifted, we enjoyed. And everything was extra magical thanks to the kids. Ellie's excitement was contagious and E.J. was just his happy E.J. self. Everything was perfect.

I have tons of stuff to tell you about! Lots of recaps are in the works, and a few other things, too. As you know based on my last post, E.J. is now six months old and somehow I still haven't gotten around to writing a few introspective/silly/generally E.J.-related posts that I've been meaning to write for the past six months. I'm hoping to catch up on some of that this month, in addition to sharing our holiday fun with you.

Of course, I can't quite hit the ground running with this because this week we're off to Disney for six days! Eric is running the Disney Marathon on SUNDAY - do you believe that? He's going to rock it! Ellie is also running in the runDisney Kids' Race on Thursday, so we're going down to Orlando for that and staying until Tuesday. In addition to the running, there will be lots of Disney fun on either end! I can hardly wait.

So, I'm going to try to schedule a couple of posts to go up here and there while we're gone, but otherwise, I'll hit the recapping in earnest when we return. In the meantime, here's a brief recap of what we've been up to and what is on the blogging agenda:

Although I had work leading up to our holiday travel (and more since we've been back), we did take some time out to check out Christmas light displays around Jacksonville, including the Landing Christmas Tree, Deck the Chairs at the beach and ZooLights:

With my Erics at ZooLights

We spent Christmas proper down in St. Pete with family. We kicked things off by spending Christmas Eve morning at Busch Gardens:

Ellie rode her very first roller-coaster!

The kids were angels at Christmas Eve church (although at one point, Ellie did turn around and ask the girl in the pew behind us, "Am I gonna go home now?" and bless her heart, the little girl thought for a moment and answered, "Eventually!"):

After church!

We had Christmas morning at my Dad's house:

Ellie is ready for presents!

Then went to Gramz's house for the W. family celebration:

It was so great to have everyone together!

On the 26th E.J. and I went up to Cleveland - his first flight and first time meeting his great-grandfather, among many other family members:

The oldest and youngest members of our family - 92 years apart!
(Of course, E.J. will only hold the "youngest" crown for a few months - two more great-grandbabies are due in March!)

Back home, Eric and Ellie kept themselves busy:

Father-Daughter movie date!

When we returned to Jacksonville, Santa made a belated stop at our house for our own family Christmas (and he brought the kids a totally made-over Ikea play kitchen!):

Merry Christmas!

And, that same night, we celebrated the new year:

Happy New Year!

It has been a blast and I can't wait to tell you about all of it. But for now, I must prepare for our upcoming trip! Stay tuned! And Happy New Year to you!
