Trimming the Tree

The weekend after Thanksgiving was spent with lots o' holiday fun here in Jacksonville, including the decorating of our own Christmas tree - E.J.'s first tree-trimming experience!

Of course, before we could get started, we had to dress the kids in matching pajamas, because why else do you have more than one kid?

Gingerbread man jammies!

Also, can we just discuss how awesomely excited Ellie is about all things Christmas this year? She LOVES Christmas lights and Christmas trees and all that jazz. In fact, she loves it so much that before we started decorating, she hugged and kissed our tree, and even "booped" its "nose." Oh, yes. She booped it.

Ellie hugging and booping our tree

Once all the tree PDA was finished, we got to work trimming the tree. Ellie was more excited about playing with our ornaments than hanging them (toddlers, right?), but she still did manage to help a few find their way to the tree.

Atta girl!

E.J. primarily supervised.

I also showed E.J. some ornaments and let him "help me" hang one.

Checking out the ornaments

Helping me hang one

I know I say this every year, but I just love how our tree has changed over time. I bought this tree for our first Christmas in Washington, D.C., in 2005. Eric and I were not even engaged yet. We picked up a bunch of red ball ornaments, beads and bows at Target to adorn our new tree, along with an angel tree topper from the Rite Aid by the Crystal City Metro Station. We started a tradition of exchanging ornaments each year in the hopes of filling it out with more personalized trimmings.

Our tree, circa 2005

Since that first D.C. Christmas, our tree has stood in eight homes in four states. The generic ornaments have been entirely replaced with new ornaments that symbolize the life we've built together: ornaments that reflect the cities in which we've lived, the places we've traveled, our first Christmas together, our marriage, pregnancy and each of our children. Each and every ornament on our tree has a story behind it, a tale of why it is meaningful to us and what it says about our time together.

Our tree through the ages, becoming more and more full of personal ornaments!

I feel like our tree's transformation is even more meaningful now as we pull out all those ornaments with our children, and Eric and I reminisce about the ornament's origin and tell our kids about the memory it represents.

Showing Ellie her "First Christmas" snowbaby ornament from Eric and me

Ellie helped us hang ornaments as much as she was willing, and when the kids grew bored of the whole thing they played next to the tree while Eric and I finished decorating.

Such unhappy children.

Eric and the kids

When all the ornaments were hung, we all sat back and enjoyed the tree.

Looking good, 2014 Tree!

The kids checking it out from the bottom up

I just can't wait to celebrate our first Christmas as a family of four, and to keep adding to the memories made with this tree!

2006: Washington, D.C., engaged; 2007: Washington D.C., our first married Christmas together; 2008: Our first NYC apartment; 2009 & 2010: Our second NYC apartment, with a view of midtown out the window behind the tree; 2011: Hoboken, and pregnant with Ellie!; 2012: At my dad's house in St. Petersburg, FL, Ellie's first Christmas; 2013: Our Jacksonville apartment; 2014: Our Jacksonville house, E.J.'s first Christmas.
All great memories to cherish!

Dear E.J. - Five Months

My dear E.J.,

Five months! How? In my head you're still a newborn, and my mind thinks I only just gave birth, but somehow nearly half a year has passed. I always felt the time passed quickly with Ellie, too, but now with the two of you, the days seem to fly by in double time.

Probably the biggest development for you this month was that you started rolling from back to belly. Naturally, the very first time you did this was while you were sleeping (and repeated it shortly thereafter on your play mat), and even though you rolled belly-to-back first, you now seem to have forgotten that is even a possibility. Needless to say, this new skill has become quite the sleeping hindrance. Of course, you were not yet sleeping through the night before all this rolling started happening anyway, but your wakeups increased in frequency quite a bit with this new development. It got to the point that in a fit of desperation after a night or two of you waking yourself up every hour or so, I went online and ordered a (kind of pricey) self-proclaimed "Magic Sleepsuit" that was supposed to help keep you from rolling over in your sleep. It improved things (back to the status quo, at least) for a couple of weeks but just this week you have discovered how to roll over in the suit, too. I guess there's no such thing as a quick fix, eh? So, for now we're continuing on, with me rubbing my tired eyes while I spend our days giving you as much tummy time as possible so you can please-oh-please remember how to roll belly to back!

This has been a big month for you physically in other (less sleep-destructive) ways, too. A couple of big things for you now are grabbing for things and jumping. Your hand-eye coordination has improved dramatically and you are constantly reaching for just about anything that passes into your line of sight, and when you grab hold of it, you immediately pull it straight into your mouth. At your daddy's birthday celebration this week, you grabbed hold of his fork and nearly had your very first taste of cake thanks to this habit!

You also love to jump. You spent most of the month bouncing on our knees or jumping whenever we held you out with your feet touching the ground. After Thanksgiving we brought home our Jumperoo, and now you spend a good bit of time each day jumping furiously, with the occasional break to examine the toys in front of you or to flash us that trademark E.J. grin.

You're just very active on the whole. When on your back, if you're not rolling over, you're scooting around - often right off your play mat! You wiggle and arch your back and flap your arms at your sides, and my upper arms are nearly bruised from your constant kicking while I feed you. Just last night I also gave you a chance to try sitting up on your own and you were able to do so for a few seconds at a time! So it looks like we have more exciting (and possibly sleep-disrupting) milestones coming up this month.

One of my favorite things you started doing this month is shrieking. Boy, did you ever find your voice! You spent so much time just happily bouncing on my knee, yelling and squealing and screeching with delight the whole time. You also blow raspberries now, which I know is a favorite of your daddy's, and you've also taken to pursing your lips and sort of spitting during nursing sessions. I suppose it's possible I should be insulted that you are literally spitting the food I made for you back into my face, but it's really funny and cute so instead I choose to laugh and try to capture it on video.

Of course, even with all these developments, you continue to be the World's Happiest Baby. Smiles are not at all hard to come by from you, and can often be found even in the middle of an unhappy fit. All we have to do is generally coo in your direction and we'll be rewarded with your biggest grins. You giggle quite a bit, too, which is one of my most favorite sounds in the whole world. The best ways to make you laugh include tickling you or showering you with kisses (my preferred methods), or making you "fly" or swinging you around in the air (Daddy's approach).

You've started to show some interest in a few specific toys this month, most notably your glowing seahorse (it made you smile so much when we saw it in the store that we bought it on the spot) and your triangle tag toy, a hand-me-down from Ellie. You also especially like the ball and the monkey on your play mat, and you find Ellie's dog pull-toy particularly hilarious.

You're also just really, really cute. Aside from your expressive face, adorable eyebrows, and million-dollar smile, you have the most awesome hair. It's just long enough now that it sticks straight up off the top of your head and is quite possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen. It's also delightfully soft and fuzzy. I cannot get enough of that hair.

This month, we celebrated your very first Thanksgiving. We went down to St. Petersburg and spent it with family and had a great time. You rocked an adorable turkey hat and spent the meal sitting on my lap, happily ripping the paper tablecloth to shreds and relentlessly trying to ingest it. In the future, I imagine you will come to the Thanksgiving table with a more refined palate. At least, I should hope so.

We have all our Christmas decorations up now and we are preparing for what I think will be a really wonderful holiday season. I know that you are too little to really realize or appreciate what all is going on around you, but that will not stop me from trying to make your first Christmas a really special one for you. You have already met Santa Claus and helped us trim our tree, and I cannot wait to watch you experience even more holiday magic in the coming month. Between this being your first Christmas and the first that Ellie is really able to be excited about, I can hardly wait to share all the fun with both of you. I have always loved Christmas, but seeing it anew through the eyes of my children has really brought a lot of magic back into it for me. This year is going to be really special!

E.J., I just love you so much. I'm so proud to be your mama. Whenever people in public comment on how cute or sweet you are, I beam with pride and can't help but boast about what a good boy you are. You are so sweet and so happy and so much fun, and we're very, very lucky to have you as our boy. I could just eat you up, I love you so.

Happy five months, buddy.

All my love,
Mama

* * * * *

Dear E.J.,

How are you five months old already? I can't believe how much further you seem now from being a tiny baby than you did just last month. You are very strong and wiggly and have pretty much mastered grabbing the things you set out to grab, though you are still young enough that all you want to do (or are capable of doing) with them is chew(ing). Besides the obvious answer to this question (the inexorable march of time), I am beginning to wonder if the real answer doesn't include some measure of indescribable amazement. As for the element of time, I should acknowledge first of all that it is obvious you will be entirely beyond your baby era and exponentially stronger and better coordinated by the time you read this letter. You will have replaced the wiggles with purposeful movements (such as a golf swing?), and limited your eating to actual food. However, at some point between now and then, I am going to stop tracking your progress so closely. You will cease to be more than you used to be and will simply be who you actually are. I have lately been noticing this transition with your sister. She is getting so much bigger and smarter all the time, but I am at a loss for when and how it keeps happening. With you, I am looking for changes and can appreciate how many of them are happening, and in such a seemingly short time.

In both cases, the disbelief in time (or at least a statement to that effect) may not be so much a statement of fact about the surprising accumulation of it and of developmental milestones, but a more concrete way of stating awe at the entirety of your existence. The easiest way to process this is to chronicle your growth and to daily balance my excitement about the things we may someday do together against the lament for the tiny baby things of yours you will never do again, while never knowing when the adorable things of today will add themselves to that list. Keeping tabs is a constant reminder of how quickly the latter list is growing and leads to feeling like it is all going by too fast. To be clear, the statement still applies to your sister, but I can see how that may not always be the case. Ultimately, it's a pretty cool thing to interact with someone whom you have known their entire life, knowing for a fact they started with nothing but unlimited potential.

In case the entire letter ends up reading like a mess of bad philosophy, I want to at least acknowledge my favorite memories of you from this past month: your adorableness on Veterans Day; your attempt to eat my birthday cake when I tried to photo-op you holding the fork; your first Thanksgiving friendliness with my family; your not sleeping more than a few hours at a time at least a few nights per week; your constant delighted screeches earlier in the month and the raspberries towards the end; and the fact that you smile at almost everything.

My E.J., thank you for being such a happy baby. I can't imagine my life without you, your sister or your mama. I love our little family and am excited to continue to get to know you better.

All my love,
Daddy

Holiday Visiting

I recapped our actual Thanksgiving holiday yesterday, but we spent a little more time with family during our St. Petersburg visit in addition to the Turkey Day fun.

We kicked things off with a day at my mom's house. We went there straight from Jacksonville on Wednesday morning, and spent a very nice day visiting while Ellie and E.J. played with the toys. My mom made a tasty dinner and brownies for dessert in celebration of Eric's birthday.

E.J. loved this Elmo!

I had to share this one because THE HAIR.

Ellie and her Grammy reading some new books

We left my mom's house around 6:00 p.m. and went to my dad's house, where we got the kids to bed and ran some last minute errands.

We also spent some time with Eric's mom on Friday morning. She wasn't feeling well on Thanksgiving and was unable to make it to dinner, so we went to see her the next day. She loved seeing the kids!

Ellie, E.J. and their Nonnie

A happy pair!

Ellie entertained herself with the seatbelt on Nonnie's wheelchair

We spent the rest of Friday doing a little shopping, and that evening we helped my dad trim the crystal tree in the living room (aka the non-kid-friendly tree...sorry, Ellie!).

Pretty tree, with bonus cat and dog ears

Then we left Saturday morning! It was a short but sweet visit with family. Thanks to all of you for spending time with us!

Thanksgiving 2014

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! We had a perfect day with family.

We went down to St. Petersburg for the holiday, and we spent Thanksgiving morning relaxing around my dad's house, watching the Macy's parade and enjoying some monkey bread. E.J. also had his first experience with the Jumperoo (we had been storing it at my dad's house), and he was pretty pleased.

Inaugural jump in the Jumperoo

Two kids, two years apart, but pretty similar initial reactions to the Jumperoo!

We attempted to get the kids down for naps after lunch. We had surprising success with E.J. (he still naps in his swing, which we were without for this trip, so daytime sleep was hard to come by for the little guy), but Ellie declined her nap. While they were both at least trying to sleep, however, I ran around like a madwoman getting myself ready and preparing the mashed potatoes and green bean casserole for our Thanksgiving feast.

Mashing the potatoes!

When we finally gave up on the nap thing for Ellie, we got her all dressed in her adorable Thanksgiving outfit (HELLO, FOX TIGHTS) and she and Eric left with all our dinner contributions to spend some extra time over at Gramz's house.

Ready for Thanksgiving dinner!

Ellie and Eric before leaving for Gramz's house

When E.J. woke up, I got him fed and dressed and my dad, E.J. and I headed out to Gramz's house, too.

My little turkey!

Eric's sister Kelley and her girlfriend Cathy were already at Gramz's, so we said our hellos and all spent some time hanging out while making the final dinner preparations. E.J. was immediately scooped out of my arms and I barely held him again until we left. I get it; he's irresistible! Ellie was also being particularly bubbly and outgoing, so she was a lot of fun.

Before too long, it was time to eat! Everything was delicious.

Gathered around the table

Our first Thanksgiving as a family of four!

This guy looks ready to eat! Or, you know, rip the tablecloth to shreds and try to stuff it into his mouth whenever nobody was looking.

Of course, while we ate we went around the table and all shared what we are thankful for. (Side note: that was how I shared I was pregnant last year!) A highlight of that was Eric saying that I "enrich the crap out of our kids' lives." He's eloquent like that.

After dinner, we sang happy birthday to Gramz (whose birthday was on Thanksgiving) and Eric, then enjoyed cake, cheesecake and pumpkin pie.

Happy birthday, Gramz and Eric!

E.J. with the birthday girl

Ellie was hilariously pumped about the cake, and "I WANT CAAAAAKE" was her mantra for the rest of the meal (imagine that being said with the same single-minded intensity as a zombie might say, "I WANT BRAAAAINS" and you've got a pretty accurate picture).

Going straight to the source!

Happy cake face

After dinner we helped clean things up, hung out for a few more minutes then bid our farewells to Eric's family and headed back to my Dad's house.

W. family love

The sign of a good Thanksgiving...and it's not over yet!

Back at the house, we put E.J. to bed (poor overtired little love), got Ellie outfitted in festive pajamas and went to work trimming the family Christmas tree. Once again, Ellie was very into the whole thing and we were left with an adorable cluster of ornaments front and center at Ellie's eye level. After hanging each ornament, she'd run back to the boxes to get more while exclaiming, "NOW WE CAN DECORATE!" Every time. So cute.

VIDEO: "Now we can decorate!"

E.J. may have been sleeping, but I didn't want him to be excluded!

Sweet Ellie

Ellie's ornament cluster

What can I say? The girl loves socks.

So sweet.

All the ornaments are hung! There's nothing left to do but lay back and admire it.

And that was really it! We got Ellie to bed and the grown-ups snacked some more and drank some wine before calling it a night ourselves. It was a very long, exhausting, but awesome day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The 16(x2)-Year-Old I Fell in Love With

Today my husband turns 32 years old. He has doubled his age since the first birthday of his we celebrated together! The next time he does that, we may very well be celebrating his birthday with the grandchildren. CRAZY TALK.

This year I thought I would return to the tried-and-true "List of Things I Love About Eric" birthday post. I strayed from this last year, citing Thanksgiving travel as the reason, but let's be honest: it was really because I was trying to survive first-trimester nausea and fatigue and blogging at all was low on my list of priorities. Sorry, Eric!

But this year, my nausea has subsided and both kids are napping (or at least, that's what I'm telling myself as I tune out Ellie's singing from her room), so I can more appropriately reflect on the man I married. He is one awesome man, and if you don't want to take my word for it, perhaps this list will convince you. If you need further proof, please refer to previous lists: 30, 29, 28, 27, and 26 years old.

32 Things I Love About My 32-Year-Old Husband
(in no particular order)

1.  I love that he apparently does the dance to "Uptown Funk" when nobody is watching. Like, practices in the mirror. ADORABLE.
2.  I love that he never gives up on the important people in his life. He always wants his family members to feel included, and works hard to help foster good relationships between our kids and his loved ones.

Taking the kids to visit his mom
3.  I love that he is trying to teach his students good, valuable life lessons in addition to graphing and equations.
4.  I love when I catch him making the same face as E.J.
Twinsies
 5.  I love how patient he can be with Ellie. Admittedly, he and I kind of take turns with this. But that means that when I've about reached my limits, he steps in and takes over with the patience of Job. It melts my heart to watch him calm Ellie's tantrums or hear her giggles while they play.
6.  I love that he added a list of "things to discuss" to my to-do list and it looked like this:
Look! I took a screenshot of EXACTLY WHAT IT IS LIKE to be married to Eric.
"Vis a vis" in to-do lists. This is my life, people.
7.  I love that not only does he tolerate the constant emails I send him while he works all day (hey, I have stuff to share and don't want to forget!), but he claims to even enjoy them and always responds to each one.
8.  I love that he cares passionately about the issues his students face that contribute to the disparity in educational achievement.
9.  I love that he is constantly evaluating and re-evaluating his skillset and current occupation to make sure he is using his strengths in the most meaningful way.
10.  I love that he regularly shows me how much he appreciates me. At times, he says such nice things about my parenting that it embarrasses me. Perhaps he's exaggerating my parenting prowess a bit, but it feels really good to know that he appreciates the work that I do and thinks that I'm successfully raising our children to be good people.
11.  I love how supportive he was during the labor and birth of both of his children. I can't imagine having endured either for as long as I did without him by my side.

Honestly. Couldn't have done it without him.
12.  I love that he "reads" presidential biographies via audiobook while he runs.
13.  I love the way he looks when he holds Ellie on his shoulders.
So sweet.

14.  I love his back rubs.
15.  I love how he stepped in and took such great care of Ellie while I was in the hospital with E.J., even making sure she had matching outfits and bows in her hair. Knowing that Ellie was well-cared for allowed me to focus on our sick newborn and my own recovery without worrying about what was going on at home.

Eric and Ellie at the playground while E.J. and I were in the hospital
16.  I love that he worked so hard yet again to find us a great home this year.
17.  I love the way he looks in his blue cargo shorts.
18.  I love that he has been dedicated to his training and will finally run a marathon in January.
We're all excited to cheer Eric on for 26.2 miles!
19.  I love that when I told him I wanted a particular wrap for wearing E.J., not only did he buy it for me as a surprise gift, but beforehand he did all sorts of research into types of fabrics, sizes, etc. of woven wraps. That is love.
20.  I love that he is willing to wear E.J., and he looks so very good doing so.
Look at these two!
21.  I love that when he does golf, he works hard to find a time to do so that won't take away from our family time. I practically had to throw him out the door to golf yesterday (in honor of his birthday) while the kids and I entertained ourselves.
22.  I love how excited he gets about our family fun - Halloween, Christmas, vacations. It's so much more fun to me to have a partner who is also really excited about making these great family memories for our kids.
Eric and Ellie (err...excuse me: Captain Hook and Tinkerbell) on Halloween this year
23.  I love that he says the prayers before dinner each night.
24.  I love that he fills my car with gas for me whenever he drives it and my tank is anywhere near empty.
25.  I love that he tells me he loves me when I get back in bed after getting up with E.J. during the night.
26.  I love the way his eyes sometimes look like they have a touch of green in them.
27. I love that not only does he prioritize his own family, but mine as well. He understands how important things like my family reunions are and always does whatever he can to help get me there.

Not only does he try to make sure we can go to these reunions, he even poses and takes the family photos!
28.  I love when he does voices. His Batman voice is spot-on (and Ellie recognizes it as such), and you just can't beat hearing the man you love rocking some Grover, Ernie and Mickey Mouse.
29.  I love the way he just wants everything to make sense and be logical. I get that, although it is sort of a lesson in futility when you live with a toddler. That doesn't stop him from trying to reason with our two-year-old, though!
30.  I love that when the sunset is particularly beautiful, he does whatever he can to make sure I see it.
31.  I love his fluffy, un-gelled hair.
32.  I love his appetite for knowledge and debate, and that he is constantly seeking to learn and understand new points of view.

And there you have it, friends - just a small sampling of the many things I love about Eric. He sure is a catch and I'm lucky to have him as my partner in life.

Happy birthday, my dear. You're my favorite.
