St. Augustine Christmas Parade

When we finished the Gingerbread Man Dash I posted about yesterday, we weren't through having holiday fun in St. Augustine. The town was holding its Christmas Parade that same morning, so we left the race and went downtown to scope out a spot to watch.

We drove around a bit trying to find parking, but eventually found a spot and made our way to the parade route. The parade was to begin at 10:00 and we got to our spot (right on the curb!) around 10:20, which was perfect timing. We had just enough time to get settled and snap a couple of pictures before the parade reached us.

Ready for the parade!

Parade time!

The parade was great fun. It was quite an eclectic assortment of participants, from pirates to princesses to bunnies to tigers, accompanied by nativity scenes, marching bands, local businesses, decked out cars, dressed-up dogs and even Storm Troopers in kilts. Something for everyone!

The kids, of course, were as cute as buttons, and seemed to really enjoy themselves. E.J. happily bounced up and down for...well, everything, because E.J. loves everything. Ellie took a little longer to warm up to the whole thing but hey, toss a couple of lollipops her way and she's yours. We had a great time!

This faaaaaaaace. It's too much.

We didn't stay until the end of the parade, so I'm not sure how long it really went on, but we caught about an hour's worth of marching fun before calling it quits in favor of beating traffic to get home for lunch and naptime. We needed to rest and recharge, because the day's holiday fun wasn't over yet!

Gingerbread Man Dash

This past Saturday was a holiday fun-filled day for us, starting with the Gingerbread Man Dash in St. Augustine. Ellie ran in the Kids' Fun Run and Eric ran the 5k.

We had to get an early start, as Ellie's race was set to start at 8:00 a.m. and we live a half hour away, plus had to pick up both of their numbers. Both kids handled the early wake-up call remarkably well! We all got decked out in our Christmas spirit finery and hit the road a little after 7:00 a.m., arriving in St. Augustine about 20 minutes before Ellie's race.

Ready for a day of festive fun!

When we arrived we picked up the race packets and got ready for Ellie's run. She and her daddy looked so cute in their running clothes with their numbers!

The first of many races they'll run together, I hope!

The concept for the kids' run was to actually chase a gingerbread man! They had a runner in costume who ran along with the kids. Each child runner was given a set of red circle stickers, and their goal was to chase down the gingerbread man and put stickers on him to represent "bites." Ellie never really got to the gingerbread man part, but it was a cute concept.

Kids "biting" the gingerbread man

Ellie and Eric got a bit of a late start (my fault for being in the wrong spot), but they were off at the back of the pack!

There they go!

The race stretched for two laps around the lake at the World Golf Hall of Fame. Ellie didn't make it too far before hitching a ride. It's possible she was a little spooked by all the craziness, even though they were at the back of the group.

How cute are these two?

By the time they made their second lap and were approaching the finish line, Eric was able to convince her to run a bit more to finish things off.

Here they come!

And then she was awarded her very first race medal, and given a gingerbread cookie to boot!

Way to go, Ellie!

She is PSYCHED.
Also, festively adorned pigtails might be my new favorite thing.

We posed for photos with mixed success.

Apparently she was unhappy with her finish time. She wanted a PR!

We didn't have long to wait before Eric had to head off for his 5k. While he ran, Ellie, E.J. and I hung out by the finish line and watched the 10k and 5k runners. Ellie kept asking, "Is it time for Daddy yet?"

Watching the runners

She didn't have long to wait because Eric was FAST! So fast, in fact, that I wasn't ready with the camera when he came by! I managed to get it up to snap one quick picture.

Look at him, even giving a thumbs up like it's nothing.

As it turns out, Eric won his age group! Way to go, Eric!

Great job, runners!

Then we posed for another photo...

...and refueld a little bit.

Apple, sandwich, and smoothie. Runners can't live on gingerbread cookies alone.

Great job, W. family runners!

It should be noted that the next time Eric and Ellie run together will be in January: Ellie will be running in the Disney Kids' Run, and Eric will be running the Disney MARATHON! Exciting stuff!

She Just Keeps Growing Up

Somehow, time keeps on flying by and my kids just keep getting bigger and bigger, despite all my protesting. Just a couple of weeks ago, Ellie reached two significant "big kid" milestones: her first haircut, and moving out of her crib!

We took Ellie to a local kids' hair salon for her first haircut the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. First, we snapped a couple of before pictures:

Farewell, original baby locks!

The salon was perfect. When we first arrived, they asked Ellie if she wanted to pick a movie to watch. Naturally, she selected a Doc McStuffins episode. Instead of chairs to sit in, they had a selection of vehicles, and Ellie chose to sit in a fire truck. (E.J. preferred the pink convertible - TO PLAY IN, because nobody is touching a fuzzy hair on that head!)

Ready for her haircut!

Before starting in on her hair, they pampered her a little with glitter polish manicure.

She feels so fancy right now.

Then they sprayed her hair with water (her least favorite part of the whole thing) and gave her a quick trim.

Now that's the way to get your hair cut!

When she was all trimmed up, they gave her a braid in the front and let her pick two hairclips to accessorize with. She chose two glitterly, colorful butterfly clips. They topped off the whole 'do with a sprinkling of glitter and she was done!

Glitter in her hair!

Showing off her braid - "I look like Anna!"

Then they gave her a certificate and a lock of her hair to make it really official. I was quite proud that through the whole thing, I didn't shed one tear! But she is so grown up. I have spent the last two and a half years lamenting her baldness but now she's out to the salon to get her hair done. SLOW DOWN, TIME.

So official!

When we got home, we got some after shots.

You could tell the difference the most in the back. They did just what I wanted - keep as much length as possible (we worked hard for this hair!), but clean it up.

So pretty!

The other big milestone for Ellie was the move from four-sided baby crib to "big girl" toddler bed. We've been talking about doing this for a while, but I was on Team Crib For Life for a long time. She was just sleeping really well and had never shown any interest in climbing out, so why mess with a good thing? Well, lately her naps started becoming more sporadic (she naps every couple of days or so), meaning we had less to lose, so we went for it.

When we got back to Jacksonville after our Thanksgiving travel, Eric removed the front rail of Ellie's crib and replaced it with the matching toddler rail. I made up her new bed with the new Doc McStuffins bedding we bought for her and read and re-read the Elmo "big kid bed" book to drive the whole thing home.

Ellie's new bed!

She's ready to sleep in her big bed!

I'm not sure if it was one or all of those strategies that made the most difference, but Ellie took to her big girl bed like it was nothing. She has had absolutely no nighttime issues whatsoever. The first night she slept straight through the night, and when she woke up in the morning, she just climbed out to get some books then tucked herself back into bed and did a little reading until we went in to get her. What a sweetheart!

Reading in bed after her first successful night as a big girl!

Look at all those books she read!

Naps have been a little more hit-or-miss, but hey, they were when she was in the crib anyway. Actually, it's possible that she's been napping slightly more now in her big girl bed than she was before. Some days she'll just play for the whole "naptime" (but still remains happily in her room by herself), other days she'll play for a bit and then lay down when she gets tired and fall asleep. On one occasion she just went right to sleep. I figure, though, no mattter what she's doing in there, she's getting some low-stimulation solo play time and I'm getting a break to recharge. I also enjoy watching her on the video monitor and laughing at her antics!

Ellie's first naptime including lots of wandering around, dressing her doll and riding her toy horse. Boy, did Eric and I nearly die laughing when she galloped past the monitor on that horse!

Day 2 naptime activities: Playing with her dinosaur,;up close and personal princess; rocking her crown, tutu, polka dot leggings, Elmo Halloween bucket and wand; and SLEEPING! Praise be!

A regular naptime sight

So, there you have it: first haircut and big girl bed. Next up: driver's license and college applications. It's going too fast!

Celebrating Eric

We have spent the last week since Eric's birthday celebrating him in small ways, but I realized I never shared his actual birthday! It wasn't much, but it was a pretty nice little celebration at home.

He did get in some golf time the day prior, so his birthday itself was a family affair. He had the day off work (the last day of Thanksgiving break), so we were able to spend the whole day together! In the morning we went out to the Town Center for the kids to meet Santa (more on that in a later post!), then had a nice lunch together at home while the kids napped.

When the kids woke up, we donned our party hats, sang to Eric and had cake - Ellie's favorite part of the whole shindig, of course! E.J. also tried to get in on the action, but luckily, his aim still needs work, so his tastebuds still have yet to taste delicious cake.

Ellie and Eric blowing out the candle! I dropped the ball and forgot to make sure we had actual birthday candles, so this Yankee Candle was a stand-in. Wife of the Year!

E.J. is making his move...

Oops!

Luckily he missed getting the fork in his mouth, yes, but even more luckily, he missed stabbing himself in the eye with it. Phew.

Your baby has chocolate on his face? Only one thing to do.

"That's a lot of cake!"

My Erics

A quiet day indeed, but I hope Eric knows how much we all love him and were happy to celebrate him on his birthday!

Happy Birthday, Eric/Daddy!

Daddy-Daughter Date Night

This past Friday, Eric and Ellie went on their first real Daddy-Daughter date. Oh, sure, they've done plenty of things just the two of them before, but this was a fancy thing: Eric took Ellie as his date to the Teach For America-Jacksonville holiday party!

Ellie got dressed up in a holiday sweater dress, and Eric wore a festive shirt and tie (with Rudolph socks!). They looked great!

All dressed up and ready to party!

A good-looking pair!

From what I hear, the party was a great success. They decorated cookies, hit the photobooth, and danced together. I hear Ellie also enjoyed playing with the other kids in attendance, and running in circles.

Cookie decorating...

...though she preferred eating the icing and sprinkles!

In the photobooth!

Ellie was just so happy to go to a "party with Daddy" and when they came home, she was PUMPED. She spent a good while running around the kitchen saying, "Daddy! Want to dance together?" and grabbing Eric's hands - to which, of course, Eric replied, "The answer is always yes." And dance they did! It was the sweetest thing.

I love those two and I'm so happy that they're such good buddies. It melts my heart to watch Eric be such a great dad to his daughter and to see how much she adores him in return.

Mama Kissing Santa Claus!

Eric captured this precious moment for E.J. and me at the St. Augustine Christmas Parade yesterday, and it immediately became one of my most favorite pictures of me with my baby boy.

How can you resist that face?
